A home-grown radio program has been developed to help mums, dads and other family members to understand children’s development needs. Raun Wantaim Savemahn (Hangout with Savemahn) is set in the fictional village of Mambu Hanua, a typical Papua New Guinean village. The plot unfolds around the life of Savemahn, his family and his fellow villagers. Each week the story addresses topical issues for parents, caregivers and young people, including positive parenting, early childhood development, ending violence against women and children, children’s and mothers’ nutrition, health and water, sanitation and hygiene. Each episode is followed by facilitated discussions with talkback and give-aways. The aim is that audiences tune in to enjoy the drama and comedy, which then leads to conversations in families and communities about the issues being discussed.
